A written text of his lectures titled, “Talks to American Students” completely changed my life and I think about him every day.
Russian feminists and punk band who continually stand up to Putin and stand for female and LGBT rights. Mad inspiration by their willingness to be sent to Siberia to bring attention and shed light on injustice. We could all use a little bit of their backbone
My teacher. The one I connect to the strongest. Most grateful to have come into his works via another teacher Reno Muenz. Best titles include “The Book” and “This is It” but go on YouTube and listen to any of his lectures for mad inspiration.
The father of existentialism, what else needs to be said?! I thought it was dope that he dedicated his life to his writing and philosophical explorations swearing off any other distractions. Although I truly understand less than 10% of what he said, he is still one of my favourite humans.
The first teacher who I followed into questions of spirituality. I read his books and underline every sentence because it all makes so much sense.
I saw “Crimes and Misdemeanors” in Grade 11 and haven’t missed one of his films since. He touches on all the feelings of the human experience and does so with grace, humour and seamless storytelling.
Good to Great
Big ups to Jim Collins who helped show me the importance of getting the right people on the bus and then thinking about where to put them. Conscious Counsel is an attempted reflection of his ideas and I am grateful to him.
The E-Myth Revisited
Work on your business, not work in your business. Changed my life and set the course for Conscious Counsel. Many thanks!
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Taught me about paradigm shifts and starting at the end. Profound impact and much appreciation for this contribution.
A pioneer in Canadian art and outdoor enthusiast, he contributed to the world his own perspective of forests and trees. I have a Harris print up in my kitchen and marvel at it every day.
Alain de Botton
One of my favourites. Just an incredibly talented writer who is able to explain complex philosophical themes to someone as basal as me. His works “On Love” and “The Art of Travel” speak directly into my heart.
The Tragically Hip
Redefined Canadian music for my generation and is also the band I’ve seen live the most. They are one of my favourite bands and have been with me all the way - from summer camp to high school to law school to Conscious Counsel. Favourite released recordings a three-way tie between “Live Between Us”, “Phantom Power” and “Day For Night”
Africa Yoga Project
Being a part of it has changed my life. I’ve seen what it means for an organization to literally create an economy for people who need it the most. If I ever doubt myself or my reach, I think about what AYP has done and tell myself anything can be done.
Just listen to them and you’ll get it. Start with any of these albums “Hvarf/Heim”, “Inni” or “Agaetis Byrjun” and your life will be changed forever. The music that makes me feel most alive.
First female to run the Boston Marathon in 1967 despite misogynist men tearing at her bib and telling her to leave the race. Doing what was right because it was right. Courage.
An empowering and intelligent poet and activist, Audre stood up to society when everyone tried to force her down. She kept her voice loud and inspired others to challenge unacceptable norms. Her quote: "It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences," is most inspirational
No other character has influenced my life as much as Ace Ventura. I watched the film incessantly as a youth and only in my adolescence realized how much of my behaviour is adapted from the film, specifically Ace’s complete disregard for social norms or expectations.
East of Eden
I’ve never read a book as vociferously as I did “East of Eden”. Steinbeck’s seminal novel explained everything of what it means to be a human being through incredible characters and I’ll always remember how special reading that book was to me.
The most dominant athlete of her time, Serena kicks butt and does it her own way. For more than 15 years she has been the best at her sport, continually challenging herself and pushing her limits to stay on top. She lives her life her way, doesn't take crap from others and looks how she wants to look. We love watching her continually crush it
Vincent van Gogh
Despite the beautiful art, of which “The Harvest” is my favourite, I find Van Gogh fascinating because he never reached fame or notoriety during his lifetime but still believed in his vision and kept with it, despite commercial temptations to do what everyone else was doing. Follow your path is what VVG taught me.
